Winter in Wanaka -July to October 2008

What a great winter – we and our guests enjoyed great skiing at Cardrona and Treble Cone with consistent snow right up to the last day of the season -12 October.

For my birthday Tiffany organised an overnight cross country trip to Meadow Hut at Snow Farm. Tiff’s boyfriend Richard had never cross country skied but we organised a one hour lesson for him and then we were off-a completely unreasonable challenge for a brand new skier! The little hut was soon very cosy and after watching the beautiful sunset sat down to a wonderful meal of cheese with our own sourdough bread, oxtail stew and a great bottle of local wine. In the morning we played in the igloo outside and then set off on the trek back (a round trip of 18 km).Snow Farm is a beautiful peaceful place and I highly recommend you try cross country skiing whilst in Wanaka.

One of our guests Lars had the most wonderful day heli skiing.

We also visited Lake Ohau near Mt Cook for a weekend skiing with my daughter Melitta and her partner Charlie. Fresh powder snow was just magic. I saw a long line of skiers setting off from the top of the lift up to a ridge and had to follow. From the top the view was magic but then - how to get down? To ski down in fresh powder looks beautiful but is not easy to ski if you haven’t learnt the technique. Well I made fresh tracks and got down in 2 turns but in doing so had to ski right across everyone else’s fresh tracks which is sacrilegious but the great thing about New Zealanders is that no one seemed to mind. I arrived down to cheers from the family and was renamed Hell Mutti.
