Winter solstice celebration - 21 June 2008An unusual Wanaka tradition involving the more adventurous of the village, led by the builder of Tiritiri Lodge Graeme Vallance, the Winter solstice water skiing spectacular has hardy locals braving sub zero air and 5 degC lake water. Once under way the major debate is wether the discomfort of freezing air, spray, and occasional snow flurries is less bearable than an anxious paddle back to shore in a marginally warmer lake. Mercifully the decision is usually made for them by the erratic nature of the ski boat pilots, the variable being how far from the shore they are deposited. As you can see the locals dress appropriately!
